Planning
for a sign:
Why is sign planning so important? Simple, your sign is going to serve as your first outreach to passers-by for the next 10 to 20 years. Not only will it be the first thing people see as they pass your facility, the changeable message will be the constant reminder of your presence & what's happening in you church. A sign that cannot be read is of no use. A sign that wears quickly, rusts & fades can quickly send the message that your church is inattentive. A sign whose message can be rearranged by vandals, is a mockery that can tarnish your churches image as well. The Church-Signs-Buyers resource is a helpful reference for your church committee to rely on when making this decision in your churches sign ministry. |

Designing
a Sign:
It is vital to make sure that your sign can be read. Speed of traffic & distance to viewer are the main criteria in sign selection & are based on "Rule of Thumb" guidelines which are universal to the sign industry. Walking Traffic - If you are mainly in a neighborhood, you do not need a large sign, & your codes may restrict the sign of sign you can have. You will need: 3" Changeable Letters 3'x4' to 4'x6' sign. No lighting or even Cast Lighting should be considered for code issues. 25 to 45 mph Traffic - 4" letters are a minimum, and 6" letters should be considered if there is a lot of "sign competition" in the area, or the sign is set back from the road more than 30ft. You should consider: 4" to 6" Changeable Letters 4'x 6' to 4'x 8' sign. Again, you may still be in a light restricted sign area, however a lighted sign will always enhance you signs ability to be read. 35 mph to 50 mph Traffic - 6" letters are a minimum, and 8" letters should be considered if there is a lot of "sign competition" in the area, or the sign is set back from the road more than 30ft. You should consider: 6" to 8" Changeable Letters 4'x 8' to 5'x 10' sign. 55 mph Traffic or higher - 8" letters are a minimum, and 10" letters should be considered. Remember, at 55mph, not only is text harder to read, the view has less time to read the message. A few lines of text is all you will need, so make sure the Graphics portion of the sign is prominent & the changeable message is kept to a minimum. You should consider 8" to 10" Changeable Letters 5'x 8' to 6'x 12' sign. |

What's
in a Sign?
Importance
of Design The Flush Closing Door Sign, has a framed door design which (typically) closes into the sign, much like a hinged door does. The Main advantage to this is that you get a tighter fit around the changeable message, so not only are vandals kept from the sign, but it keep moisture and debris from entering the sign as well. The Vandal Guard is an exterior door that is attached to the sign face. Though not an integral design, the vandal guard is secure enough to keep vandals from changing the message. Vandal Door Design Pro: Uses flat faces, so the appearance in more desirable. Many of these signs use self-lifting supports for convenience. The door itself, is more reinforced & performs well against entry of dirt. Cons: The double layering creates more glare & can be harder to read. Face panels are closer to the lighting, which creates greater "Hot" Spots. Condensation is an extreme nuisance in humid climates and obscures the message on mornings & evening when dew levels rise. This humidity level also is detrimental to the graphics & can cause internal damage. These designs are typically more expensive. Vandal Guard: Pros: Graphics are not obscured by multiple layers. Thermo-Form Faces create the Pan-Forms which make the sign faces more rigid than flat materials. This Pan-Forming also give a superior spread of lighting. Condensation is rarely ever encountered. Vandal Guard Signs are less expensive Cons: The Thermo-Forms also have vertical ridges. Though these ridges give strength, they are sometime viewed as less desirable. Vandal Guard Signs lack some convenience like self-lifting arms and require more work when changing light bulbs. |

The real Story about Aluminum Structures Aluminum Structures: I can't stress this one enough, but Companies pushing the Aluminum Structure are relying on misleading or misdirecting information. The underlying importance of selecting a strong structure is safety, so you should consider the real facts about aluminum. According to MatWeb (www.matbed.com) the ultimate strength of 6061-t6 Aluminum is 45,000 psi, compared to Standard Grade ASTM A36 Steel which is 79,800 psi. This is a difference of nearly double. Some Marketing schemes can suggest that "pound for pound" aluminum is stronger than steel, which is merely a ½ truth. Aluminum is lighter than Steel. Inch for Inch, column for column, Steel is much stronger than Aluminum. Furthermore Aluminum's fatigue strength drop drastically to only 14,000 psi, which means, it is a matter of time before your aluminum columns will drop in strength by nearly ¼. |
